I finally hit my first $1,000 emergency fund and it felt impossible 6 months ago

I found out from a Dave Ramsey article that most people can't cover a $400 surprise expense. That stat blew my mind because I used to be one of those people. Six months ago I had $0 saved and maxed out a credit card. I started by packing my lunch every day and cutting my subscription services down to just one. It took me 23 weeks of small $40 transfers to my savings account to get to that $1,000 mark. Honestly it just feels good to know if my car tire blows or my kid gets sick I won't be reaching for plastic. Has anyone else here done the slow grind to their first emergency fund?

Oh man, "felt impossible" is the EXACT right way to put it. I remember staring at that $1,000 number thinking there was NO way I'd ever get there. Your story about the $40 transfers really hit me because that's how I did it too - just tiny little bits every week that felt pointless at first. It's so hard to keep going when you're only seeing a couple bucks move but then one day you look up and suddenly you're there.
