Dropped $38 on a screen kit for my Pixel 6a and the digitizer was dead on arrival
So back in March my Pixel 6a took a little tumble off the bar counter and the screen cracked bad enough that half the touch grid stopped working. I figured I would save some cash and fix it myself instead of paying the shop down on 6th street $140, so I grabbed one of those all in one screen kits off a site I won't name for $38. Kit showed up, I watched the videos, warmed the edges with a hair dryer, got the old screen off without wrecking anything, and felt pretty good about myself. Then I plugged the new one in and the touch was totally dead on the right third of the display. I pulled it back off thinking I pinched a cable, reseated everything twice, same deal. Turns out the digitizer on those cheap kits is a total coin flip and I torched a perfectly good Saturday plus the $38 finding out, and now I still gotta pay the $140 anyway. If you are staring at a $35 screen kit and a $140 shop quote, just ask yourself what your evening is worth, because sometimes the cheap one is the expensive one. Has anyone found a kit brand that actually holds up, or is it just luck of the draw with these things?
Wait, wouldn't the digitizer being dead just mean no touch at all, not one dead third? Sounds more like a bad connection or a bum panel than the digitizer itself, but either way yeah, cheap kits are a gamble.
