Why does nobody talk about putting a stripped screw in a rubber band?

I figured that trick was fake internet junk, then a guy at a repair meetup in Fresno got a rounded case screw out of my old 3DS with a wide rubber band and steady pressure in maybe 20 seconds. What other cheap tricks like that have actually worked for you?
