Finally stopped buying pre-shredded cheese after a calculator moment at Aldi last month

I used to grab the bags for $3.50 a pop, then realized I'm paying extra for sawdust coating. Now I buy a 2-pound block for $5 and shred it myself in 3 minutes, plus it melts way better. Anyone else notice how much more you get for the same price?

Honestly, the "sawdust coating" part got me. That's exactly what that anti-caking stuff is, and it kills the melt because it's basically cornstarch. I switched to blocks a while back and the difference in taste alone is worth it, especially with cheddar or mozzarella. Tbh the whole process takes maybe 2 minutes if you have a good box grater, and you get that fresh, stringy melt you just don't get from a bag.

Oh man, the "sawdust coating" part got me too. It's like they're trying to turn cheese into a science experiment. I've got a block of sharp cheddar in the fridge right now, and I just know that pre-shredded bag stuff would turn into a gluey mess in my mac and cheese. You can practically taste the cardboard if you let it sit too long. Plus, standing there grating cheese makes you feel like you actually made something from scratch, even if it's just a quesadilla.
