I fed my family of 4 on $60 a week in 2019, now it runs $140 and the food is worse
Back in 2019 I could hit the Lidl on Charlotte Ave and walk out with a full cart for $58, beans, rice, chicken thighs, frozen veg. Now that same cart runs close to $140 and the thighs are half the size they used to be. What changed is I stopped buying what looked good and started building meals backwards from the price per pound, so dried beans beat cans and a whole chicken beats the cut up packs every single time. My grocery list is 11 items now and I cook the same 6 dinners on rotation, plus whatever leftovers turn into on Thursday. What is the one swap that saved your cart the most money?
