Is it worth buying bulk spices or sticking with small jars? I'm torn after a recent disaster.
I was at the local grocery store in Akron last week, trying to save on chili seasonings. I grabbed this huge bag of cumin from the bulk bin for like 4 bucks, thought I was being smart. Got home and dumped a ton into my pot, only to realize it was old and musty smelling... ruined the whole batch of chili. About 6 servings of beans and meat went straight in the trash. Now I'm wondering if those little jars at the dollar store are actually better for freshness, even if they cost more per ounce. The bulk stuff seemed like a solid deal until that happened. What do you all think, is it smarter to buy small and fresh or risk it with bulk to save money? Has anyone else had a spice go bad on them and mess up a meal?

Has anyone else ever felt like a total amateur chef after a spice disaster, or is it just me? I mean, I once bought a bulk bag of oregano that was so old it smelled like a dusty hay bale, and I only realized it after I'd sprinkled a bunch on my pizza. Your chili story hits way too close to home (I've definitely thrown out a few meals because of stale cumin myself). Honestly, I think the trick is to stick with small jars for ground stuff and save the bulk for whole spices, like whole cumin seeds or cinnamon bark, since those keep way longer. My wife teases me that I treat my spice rack like a weird science experiment, but I'd rather laugh at myself than eat musty chili again. Just a thought, you know, since I'm clearly no expert either.

Oh man, that is exactly the kind of disaster I've been through before. I bought a giant bag of paprika at a warehouse store thinking I was set for a year, and three months in it tasted like nothing but dust. It's so frustrating because you think you're being thrifty and then you just end up wasting money and food. For me, the little jars from the grocery store are a safer bet even if they cost a bit more, just because I know I'll use them up before they go bad. I've started only buying bulk for things like whole peppercorns or cinnamon sticks that seem to last forever, but ground spices are too risky for me now.
