Used to buy chicken breast every week, now I buy whole birds and it cut my bill by $40
For about two years I grabbed the family pack of boneless skinless breast at Kroger every Sunday, usually around $3.49 a pound, and it ate up most of my grocery money. A couple who lives down my street mentioned they buy whole chickens instead, so I gave it a shot back in March. Now I pay $6 to $8 for a 4 to 5 pound bird, roast it on Sunday, and get four meals out of it plus a pot of stock from the bones. The breast meat alone costs me way less this way, and the dark meat makes great tacos and soup. The one thing I miss is the speed, since pulling meat off a whole bird takes me about 20 minutes. Anyone have a faster way to break one down, or a different cheap protein that beats it?
