A hostel owner in Lisbon showed me the grocery store checkout trick
Back in 2019 I stayed at this tiny hostel near Alfama and the owner, this older guy named Rui, caught me buying a prepackaged sandwich for lunch. He just shook his head and said 'tourist tax.' Then he walked me to the Pingo Doce down the street, showed me the hot rotisserie chicken for like 4 euros, and a bag of bread rolls for under a buck. I ate for two days off that bird. Does anyone else have a local who clued them into a supermarket meal hack that beat any restaurant deal? I still think about that chicken.
