My hostel locker ate $40 worth of groceries in Barcelona

Last week I stuffed a bag of jamon, cheese, and bread into a hostel locker in Barcelona before heading out for the day. Came back at 10pm and the lock wouldn't open no matter how many times I spun the code. Had to wake up the front desk guy who just shrugged and said "try kicking it" - which actually worked but smashed the cheese. Has anyone else lost food to a sticky locker latch overseas?

Kicking it was a bad move, should have asked for bolt cutters or a refund first.
