Paid $40 for a 'skip the line' pass and still waited 3 hours in Rome

So I bought one of those express entry tickets for the Colosseum last spring, thought I was being smart. Turns out the 'skip the line' just puts you in a different line that merges with everyone else at security. Lost 3 hours of my afternoon and could've just bought a regular ticket for 12 bucks. Has anyone actually found a tour company that genuinely bypasses the crowds, or is it all marketing fluff?
