Vent: found out hostels in Lisbon charge a 6 euro key deposit, cash only

Stayed at a place near Rossio last week and the front desk guy told me it was refundable only if I had the exact paper receipt. I dug through my bag for 20 minutes while a line built up behind me. Turns out this is common in a bunch of spots there, and two people in my dorm lost theirs and just ate the cost. Is it worth carrying a little cash pouch just for deposits, or do some places take a card now?
