The 50/30/20 rule was invented by a senator, and I'd been quoting it like gospel for 3 years
I was poking around online at work and found out the 50/30/20 budget came from Elizabeth Warren's 2005 book, back when she was a law professor, not some money expert on TikTok. I'd been treating it like a law of physics since 2021. Thing is, she wrote it for families making around $50k, and I make about $38k in Columbus, so the 30 percent wants category never made sense for me. Switched to 60/20/20 with rent at 35 percent and it finally stopped feeling like I was failing at my own budget. Did the 50/30/20 split ever actually fit anyone else, or did you have to bend it too?
