Just realized my 2-year-old brake job looked nothing like the one I did last weekend
I pulled the front pads on my Civic last Saturday to check them and the difference from my first brake job two years ago was kind of shocking. Back then I used a C-clamp on the caliper piston with no wood block and chewed up the boot, plus I never greased the slide pins, so everything was rusted solid this time. The pads from my first job had a weird tapered wear on one side that I traced to those stuck pins. Cost me $40 for a pin kit and a tube of grease to fix what I skipped the first time. I also finally used a torque wrench on the bracket bolts at 80 ft-lbs instead of just cranking them with a breaker bar. What's the dumbest shortcut you took on a first repair that came back to bite you later?
