Tried to Rebuild My Own Carb and Ended Up Buying a New One Anyway
Got a 1986 Honda CB450 from a guy in Tacoma and the float bowl was leaking. Watched a 20 minute video, grabbed a rebuild kit for $28, and somehow got the float height way off. After 3 tries it ran worse and dumped gas everywhere. Gave up and bought a used carb off eBay for $110. It fired right up. Anyone else waste money on a rebuild kit before just swapping the part?

Man, carb rebuilds are the worst. Something that small should not be that hard but every time I've tried it the bike runs like crap after. What finally worked for me was just cleaning the old jets real good with wire and carb spray and not messing with the float at all, plus a new gasket. Ran fine for a year until I sold it. Sounds like you did the smart thing just swapping the whole thing though, sometimes the body itself is worn out and no kit will fix that.
