Tried to Rebuild My Own Carb and Ended Up Buying a New One Anyway

Got a 1986 Honda CB450 from a guy in Tacoma and the float bowl was leaking. Watched a 20 minute video, grabbed a rebuild kit for $28, and somehow got the float height way off. After 3 tries it ran worse and dumped gas everywhere. Gave up and bought a used carb off eBay for $110. It fired right up. Anyone else waste money on a rebuild kit before just swapping the part?
