My $40 thrift store cast iron skillet outlasted my roommate's $200 nonstick in 6 months flat.

Found it at a Goodwill in Portland with a layer of grime so thick I almost passed, but after scrubbing and reseasoning it’s been my daily driver while his fancy pan started flaking after three uses - has anyone else had luck bringing old pans back from the dead?

Oh, is your roommate super salty about it now? My buddy Jake pulled the same thing with a beat-up Griswold from a flea market for $20, stripped it with vinegar and scrubbed it down, and it's been his go-to pan for three years while his wife's expensive set sits in the cabinet collecting dust. He laughs every time he cooks eggs in it.

Yo @brooke_walker that part about eggs had me cracking up because I swear it's the same energy here. My roommate got all passive aggressive when my skillet slid right through scrambled eggs without sticking while his nonstick was already peeling. I spent like two hours with steel wool and baking soda stripping that Goodwill find down to the bare iron, then reseasoned it with canola oil five times in one weekend. Now it's got that dark gloss that makes people jealous and he's been using my backup pan instead of his "fancy" one.
