My 8 year old KitchenAid mixer finally locked up on me last Tuesday

Was making a double batch of sugar cookies for a bake sale and the motor just stopped mid-mix with a burning smell. Took it apart and found the plastic worm gear was completely stripped to dust. Is it worth trying to replace that gear myself or should I just bite the bullet and get a new one?

Man, that sucks. I had the same thing happen with my Hobart years ago while making bread dough and I freaked out thinking I'd have to drop hundreds on a new one. Honestly, those plastic worm gears are designed to be the weak point on purpose, so just swap it out for a few bucks online and you'll be good.
