The repair shop owner's one question killed my whole 'buy cheap twice' habit

I brought a $40 toaster back for the third time in 2 years, and the guy at the repair counter in Columbus just looked at me and said, 'How much is your time worth?' I stood there doing the math, like 3 trips at 30 minutes each plus the gas, that's nearly the cost of the good one I kept avoiding. Now I check for the simplest thing first, can I fix it myself or find a used one built before 2000? That question changed my whole buying rule, and I'm curious, how many of you factor in your repair trips when you're pricing something?
