The vinegar trick for removing rust from my old cast iron skillet actually worked after 3 tries

I let a vintage skillet sit in a 50/50 white vinegar and water bath for 8 hours and the rust came right off with a scrub, but has anyone found a faster way that doesn't smell like a pickle factory?

Does the smell ever actually go away from the house?

Hang on, I'll play devil's advocate here and say no, not really, it kind of just changes. Once you've lived with ferrets for a while your nose adjusts and you stop noticing the musky smell, but anyone walking in for the first time will catch it right away. I've had people come over and say "oh wow, it smells like ferrets here" even after I've cleaned everything top to bottom. You can mask it with air fresheners and deep cleaning but that underlying scent never fully leaves. It just kinda settles into the walls and furniture and becomes part of the house's personality.
