Unpopular opinion: Leather conditioner is ruining your boots faster than wear

I spent 8 years buying $200+ boots and having the soles separate after 18 months. Then I stopped conditioning my Red Wings and just wiped dirt off with a damp rag. My current pair is going on 4 years with zero issues. The old timers at a shop in Nashville told me modern glues dont like oils seeping down into the welt. Anyone else notice their boots last longer when you barely touch them with conditioner?

Wait, you might be onto something. I used to be all about the fancy conditioners but I've been seeing the same thing with my own boots lately.

Three years ago I started using plain mink oil on my Red Wings and they've held up way better than anything I put fancy conditioner on. The expensive stuff leaves a weird residue that actually traps dirt in the creases. Mink oil just soaks in and keeps the leather flexible without that sticky film. Boots are supposed to get beat up and show wear anyway, not look like museum pieces. Conditioners with waxes and silicones feel like they're covering up problems instead of actually feeding the leather. I'll take simple maintenance over all that fancy chemical stuff any day.
