Splurged on a fancy sleeping pad and honestly my $40 foam one was just as good
Everyone online swears you need an inflatable pad with an R value of 5 or whatever, so I finally dropped $210 on one of those name brand ones before a trip to Shenandoah last month. I slept on it for 4 nights and woke up with a sore back every single morning because I kept sliding off the thing. Meanwhile my old $40 closed cell foam pad that I bought at a surplus store in 2019 has never once let me down. The inflatable takes like 15 puffs to blow up, weighs almost 2 pounds, and I already found a tiny leak near the valve. The foam one weighs nothing, never deflates, and doubles as a seat when I stop for lunch on the trail. I get that side sleepers might need the cushion, but for a back sleeper like me the cheap pad just works. Am I missing something here, or did everyone just get sold on marketing?
