Tried a $12 foam pad on a 3 night trip in the Ozarks and my hips are still mad
I figured I'd save some cash and grabbed a cheap closed cell foam pad instead of my usual inflatable for a 3 night trip near Eureka Springs. By the second morning my hips were killing me and I barely slept, even though the pad never once leaked or popped like my air pad did last year. Is there a budget pad out there that actually cushions side sleepers, or do I just need to eat the cost of a nicer inflatable?
Closed cell foam pads don't really work for side sleepers no matter how much you spend on them. The thing is, foam pads are just too thin to cushion your hips when you're on your side, so it's not about finding a cheaper one, it's that the whole type of pad doesn't fit how you sleep. Side sleeping needs at least 2.5 to 3 inches of cushion, and foam just can't give you that. Your old air pad didn't fail you, the foam one was never going to work.
