Tried a $9 tarp from the bin at the hardware store instead of my fancy rain fly and I'm still laughing about it
Went up to Shenandoah last weekend with my old $9 blue tarp because my real rain fly was still wet from the last trip, and the tarp kept my whole tent bone dry through a solid 2 hours of rain. The $80 fly I've been lugging around for 3 seasons leaked at the seam right where it ties off, which I only found out because my sleeping bag got soaked the trip before. So now I'm wondering if anybody else has ditched the pricey stuff for a cheap tarp and never looked back?

Guess that fancy fly was just a $80 bag for your sleeping bag to soak in.
