Used to haul a 6 lb Coleman stove on every trip, now I just bring a $20 pocket rocket
I carried that green two burner Coleman for like 8 years, mostly because my dad had one and it felt like real camping. Last spring on a trip to Grayson Highlands I watched a guy boil water in 2 minutes with a stove that fits in his coffee mug, and I felt kind of dumb. I switched to a little canister stove and my pack dropped almost 5 lbs, plus I actually cook more now because setup takes 30 seconds. Anyone else hold onto heavy gear way too long just out of habit?
That "felt like real camping" line is exactly the trap. Half the reason people haul heavy gear is nostalgia, not because it actually works better. A stove is a tool for boiling water, and if a $20 one does that faster, the Coleman is just sentimental weight.
