Talked to a guy at Pick n Pull who made me rethink my whole junkyard approach

Was at the yard last Saturday hunting for a window regulator for my 99 Civic. This older dude rolls up in a beat up F150 with a toolbox full of loose sockets and he's pulling parts off a wrecked Camry, just chatting me up. I mentioned I was grabbing a second regulator because the first one I got last month was squeaky and felt like it would snap. He laughed and said "you're buying the first one you see, that's your problem. You gotta pull three and pick the best." Then he showed me how he checks the gear teeth for wear and spins the motor by hand before he even pays. I always grabbed the first part that matched, figured they're all the same. Spent maybe an extra 20 minutes with him going through the row, pulled two more regulators, and yeah, one had a rough spot in the motor. Would've been a third trip back in two weeks. Stupid simple thing but it hit me that I've been treating this whole hobby like a race instead of a slow hunt. Anyone else have a random yard stranger drop some knowledge that saved you time or money?
