Pro tip: that 'hidden job market' stat is real if you know where to look

I was reading a CareerShift report last month and saw that 70% of jobs never get posted publicly. Blew my mind because I've been spamming job boards for weeks with zero luck. A buddy in Denver told me he got his last two roles just by reaching out to managers on LinkedIn before the reqs even existed. Has anyone else cracked the code on networking your way past the application black hole?

Start reaching out to people in your target companies who are one or two steps above the role you want, they usually know about openings before HR does. Ask for a short 10 minute chat about their team instead of asking for a job.

70% of jobs never get posted publicly" - yeah but that stat gets thrown around so much it basically means nothing at this point. I've tried the "chat with managers who are one step above" thing and half the time they just tell me to apply through the website anyway. Feels like all this networking advice works great for people who are already good at schmoozing but for the rest of us it's just another way to feel awkward and waste time. Honestly I think those numbers are inflated by companies that repost the same internal job over and over or list stuff they're never gonna actually hire for.
