The bootcamp trap I keep seeing people fall into
I've been trying to switch careers into data analysis for like 8 months now and I keep noticing the same mistake over and over in this community. People hop into a 3 month bootcamp thinking it's a magic ticket to a $70k job and then get shocked when no one calls them back. I did one myself back in February and spent $1,200 on a course that taught me SQL basics and some Python loops but nothing about how to actually solve real business problems. The thing is, recruiters don't care if you finished a certificate, they want to see you can clean a messy dataset or explain why a metric dropped. So I've been spending my Saturdays pulling free data from the NYC open data portal and writing up little case studies on my own. Has anyone else noticed that the people who get hired are the ones who built projects, not the ones who just finished the coursework?

Yeah, bootcamps mostly just sell hype. Real projects beat certificates every time.

I mean I get where you're coming from but bootcamps do serve a purpose for some people. Not everyone has the time or discipline to figure out everything on their own with projects, you know? I've seen folks come out of decent bootcamps with a solid foundation and a network they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. The structure and deadlines can be a big deal if you're someone who needs that push. Plus a certificate might open the door for an interview even if the project portfolio is what actually lands the job.
