Warning about unfinished portfolios during a job hunt

I'm trying to move into graphic design and keep getting asked for a full portfolio before even an interview. My old job didn't let me keep the files, so I have big gaps. How do you show your skills when you can't show past work?

You said your old job didn't let you keep the files. Have you thought about making new pieces just to show what you can do right now?

Making new stuff to show off sounds like a plan. Too bad my brain's on vacation most days. I guess all those files walking out the door took my good ideas with them. These days, starting from scratch feels like trying to run a marathon after sleeping on the couch for a year.

Man, I feel that. My brain's been on permanent vacation since like 2018. Starting from scratch is the worst. It's like my good ideas were all on that hard drive I lost, and now I'm just left with the dumb ones. Trying to make new stuff with what's left in my head is a real struggle. I'm basically running on fumes and old memes at this point.
