Collar tie split on a small addition in Denver yesterday

Was framing a vaulted ceiling in a 24 foot wide garage addition and the collar tie snapped right at the nailed joint, not the wood itself. The 2x6 had a hairline check from the lumber yard that I missed, it gave way around 2pm when I was checking the layout. No one got hurt but the wall pushed out a half inch before I braced it with a temp 2x4. Anyone else had ties fail at the nail lines like that, or is this a bad batch from the yard?

24 foot span with a 2x6 collar tie is pretty light, that joint was never the real problem.
