Used to roll my eyes at all that personal finance stuff, just thought it was boring old people talk. Reading about your vet bill and credit score drop actually made me rethink that, pretty sobering how fast a bad situation can get worse. Might finally look into that credit card my dad keeps mentioning.

Yeah that exact same thing happened to me about two months ago. Scared the hell out of me too because I was walking under it when it let go. Springs on garage doors are under crazy tension so when they snap it sounds like a gunshot. $280 is actually not bad for both springs replaced, I paid $320 but the guy had to come out on a Saturday. The thing is you really don't want to mess with those springs yourself because they can kill you. One wrong move and that cable whips around with enough force to break bones or worse.

Man, that reminds me of a buddy of mine who bought an old farmhouse upstate. He got a deal on a truckload of "seasoned" firewood from some guy on Craigslist. Six months later his flue looked like a tar pit. He tried one of those chemical soot destroyer logs and it actually helped break it up enough that a regular brush could handle the rest. Still took him an entire weekend to get it clean though.
