It hit me that using pine for outdoor stuff isn't the disaster people make it out to be. My bench has held up fine for seasons.

How does your neighbor handle the staining routine for that pine fence, like what products and timing? In my experience, pine needs more frequent coats in rainy climates to prevent swelling. For the warped planter box, was the wood sealed before painting? That first layer seems key to keeping moisture out.

Isn't it all about how you prep the wood? I used pine for a planter box and just used exterior paint. It started warping after one rainy season. But if you use a good sealant, it might last longer. My neighbor's pine fence has been up for years with regular staining. So maybe it's not the wood but the upkeep that counts.
