Pro tip: the old timer in Tacoma said to cut my stringers 3 inches long and I finally get why
Six months ago I was building a set of deck stairs in Tacoma and an old timer at the lumber yard told me to cut my stringers 3 inches long and trim them after the landing was set. I nodded and figured he was just set in his ways. Course, I cut them to my usual length instead and ended up with a 2 inch gap at the bottom that I had to shim with a scrap of trex. Last week I did it his way on a job in Puyallup and the whole run dropped in perfect on the first try. Cost me nothing extra and saved me about 90 minutes of fiddling. Anyone else got a small habit like that from someone older in the trade?
