That $80 radar detector I bought for a meet turned into a lawn ornament

I dropped 80 bucks on a used Escort radar detector before the big Saturday meet in Tempe, hoping to avoid tickets on the long haul there, and the thing saved my bacon once on the I-10 before it died right in the middle of showing off my exhaust note to some guy in a Focus RS. Turns out the previous owner cooked the power cord, and the fix cost me another 25 for a new one, so I'm basically at a hundred bucks for a gadget that now sits in my glovebox as backup. Anyone else gamble on cheap used car electronics for a meet and end up regretting or loving the deal?
