I called BS on the 3.0L Ford Ranger needing engine-out timing chain service until my buddy's 2005 blew at 118k
I always figured the "engine out for a timing chain" stuff on the 3.0 Vulcan was internet drama from guys who beat on their trucks. Then my buddy rolled into my driveway in his 2005 Ranger with a rattle like marbles in a coffee can and a $1,800 quote from the shop in Springfield. I helped him pull it, and sure enough the rear chain guide was cracked and the tensioner was chewed to hell, all because Ford put the chain at the back of the block against the firewall. The whole job means dropping the trans, pulling the motor, and $340 in parts to fix a plastic guide that should have cost fifteen bucks. No wonder these things get dumped cheap once they hit 100k. Has anyone here actually done the job with the engine still in the truck, or is that a myth too?
