A guy at the pick n pull in Fresno laughed at me for buying a $900 car with a bad clutch, so I started checking one thing first
Last month I found a 2001 Civic on Facebook for $900 and the seller said it just needed a clutch, which I believed because I wanted to. This older guy in the next row at the Fresno pick n pull watched me pull the trans and said point blank, "you check the frame rails before you paid him?" I had not, and sure enough both rails were rusted through under the battery tray. Now I bring a flashlight and a magnet and check the rails, the strut towers, and the floor pans before I hand over any cash. Anyone else got a cheap pre buy check they never skip now?
Learned that lesson on a 98 Accord I bought off a guy in Modesto, except my problem was the rear quarter panels. Looked fine in the dark but in daylight you could see where he'd packed them with Bondo and spray painted right over it. Now I run a magnet wrapped in a rag all over any car I'm thinking about buying, and if it doesn't stick, I walk. That trick alone has saved me from at least two money pits since then.
