Old guy at the salvage yard talked me out of a $300 engine swap

Last month I was about to buy a replacement motor for my 01 Civic at Pull-A-Part in Tulsa. This retired mechanic saw me eyeing the hoist and asked what I was doing. He pointed out the block had a cracked bellhousing and told me to save my cash for a lower mile junkyard find instead. I ended up finding one with 80k fewer miles for the same price two lots over. Has anyone else had a stranger steer them away from a bad car deal at the last second?
