Took me 3 weekends to find a clunk that was a 50 cent bolt
My 2004 Crown Vic started clunking over every bump on I-85 near my place in Marietta. I pulled the sway bar links, checked the control arm bushings, even swapped the strut mounts. After 3 full weekends of poking and prodding, I finally crawled under with a flashlight and spotted the lower shock mount bolt sitting loose, maybe two threads from falling out entirely. Tightened it up with a wrench and the clunk vanished, just like that. Cost me nothing but time and a bunch of skinned knuckles because I assumed it had to be a bigger issue. Anyone else chase a noise for days only to find it was something dumb and tiny?
Wasting three weekends on a single loose bolt is not something to brag about, it means you skipped the most basic step of grabbing a wrench and checking every fastener first before tearing into bushings and struts. The real lesson here is that your process was backward, and the fact that it worked out does not make the approach any less sloppy. A guy with a lift and a torque wrench would have found that in ten minutes.
