My $400 Civic hit 300,000 miles last Tuesday and half the forum says that's luck, half says it's neglect
Bought this 1997 Civic hatch in Columbus for $400 with a blown head gasket and a trunk full of empty soda cans, and last Tuesday the odometer rolled past 300,000. Some folks here say any car that hits 300k is just dumb luck, but I think it's about doing the boring stuff on time, like the timing belt at 210k and oil changes every 3k. So which is it, luck or maintenance? Curious what mileage number made you stop and stare at your dash.
Watched a guy on YouTube try to kill an old Corolla by never changing the oil, just topping it off, and it still ran past 400k before the body rusted out from under it. That video messed with my head for a week because it made me wonder if half of what we do is just for our own peace of mind. Then I remembered my uncle's truck threw a rod at 89k because he skipped every fluid change for two years, so no, the boring stuff matters. My moment was staring at 250k on my old Accord, not because it was huge but because I did every single oil change myself and knew exactly how it got there. Luck gets you the car, upkeep keeps it alive, that's my take.
