PSA: check the rear subframe before you pay cash for that cheap project car
Picked up a 2002 Civic last spring for $900 and the guy swore the only issue was a bad clutch. I had two choices, pay him the $900 and drive it home or walk away and keep looking, and I picked the $900 because the body looked clean. Two weeks later the rear subframe gave out on the highway and I had to tow it home, turns out it was rusted through under the plastic covers. Pull the carpet back and poke the frame with a screwdriver before you hand over any cash, it takes ten minutes. Has anyone else gotten burned by hidden rust on a cheap car they thought was solid?
Did you check under the back seat too? My brother bought a $700 Accord and the rust was so bad the rear seat belt mounts were basically gone, he found out when his kid yanked on one. Cars from up north are just a gamble unless you get under them with a flashlight first.
