Just realized my envelope system is failing me on variable months

I've been cash-only for about 4 years now, and my envelope method works great until a month like this one hits. Between a $300 car repair, a birthday party, and a dentist visit, I blew through three envelopes by the 12th. I mean, part of me thinks the envelope system is good because it forces you to see the money leave, but another part wonders if we're too rigid with categories. Maybe it's just me, but should we be building a single 'flex' envelope for surprise stuff instead of pretending every month looks the same? How do you all handle months where the numbers just don't line up? Has anyone else switched to a two-envelope approach where one is purely for chaos?
