My uncle called me a sucker for carrying cash, then he paid $11 in fees on a $7 coffee
My uncle was giving me a hard time at his place in Boise last month about still using cash for everything, saying I was stuck in the past. Then we grabbed coffee and he used his card for a $7 order, and a few days later he mentioned the fees and interest had already tacked on about $11. I didn't say anything but it got me thinking about how the cheap stuff is where cards quietly bite you. I've been cash only for about a year and my dumbest purchases are the ones that actually stop me. Anyone here ever seen someone's card fees on small daily buys and tried to bring it up without starting a fight?
Did he actually show you the statement or was that his own rough math? Cause $11 in fees on one $7 coffee sounds off unless he's carrying a balance and paying interest, which is a whole different problem than the card itself. In your spot I'd just ask him straight up next time, like "hey what did that coffee actually cost you with fees," and let his own numbers do the talking instead of you lecturing him. People get defensive when you tell them they're wrong, but they can't argue with their own bill. My brother did the same thing to me about my cash habit, then I watched him swipe for a $4 snack every day for a month and he did the math himself and went quiet.
