Unpopular opinion: I actually prefer handling cash at the library fee counter

Had a chat with the librarian in my neighborhood last Tuesday about how she hates dealing with coins and small bills from people trying to pay off late fees. She said it slows down her line and makes her job harder. But here's the thing - when I hand over cash for my $2.75 fine, I feel the weight of that mistake in my hand. It sticks with me more than tapping a card or clicking a button online. I told her that and she just shrugged, said most people don't care either way. But I think that physical transaction does something for my brain. Has anyone else found that cash payments make you actually remember what you owe?

That phrase "the weight of that mistake in my hand" really hit me. Do you think handing over coins versus bills changes how much the penalty sinks in for you?

Yeah, I've actually tried paying with just quarters before and it definitely hits different. Full disclosure, I started doing cash only for fees after I realized I was forgetting to pay online and letting small fines balloon into bigger ones. My advice is to keep a specific envelope in your car or wallet just for library cash, label it "fine money," and only use that for these payments. That way you get the tactile reminder without scrambling for change at the counter and holding up the line. Your mileage may vary, but for me it's been a game changer for staying on top of those small fees.

Oh c'mon, it's a library fine, not a life lesson!
