Unpopular opinion: dried beans beat canned even when you're broke and in a hurry
I used to grab the 89 cent cans every single time because soaking beans overnight sounded like something only people with a big kitchen and free Sundays do. Then last week I did the math on a bag of pinto beans at the Aldi near me, $1.29 for a whole pound, versus four cans to get the same amount of beans, and I felt a little sick about all the money I've been tossing out. What won me over was the fast soak trick: boil them for two minutes, kill the heat, lid on, wait an hour, and they're ready to cook. No overnight planning, no forgetting them on the counter and waking up to a smell. I made a big pot on Sunday with onion, cumin, and a ham hock from the corner store, and I've been eating off it for five days now, rice bowls, quesadillas, straight out of the pot standing at the stove. The canned ones honestly taste flat and watery to me now, and that was the part I did not expect. Am I the only one who slept on dried beans this long, and what do you add to yours so they don't get boring by day three?
