Finally found the real reason my chimney was drafting backwards

After chasing a draft issue for two weeks in my own house, I stumbled onto a 1960s manual my grandpa left in the basement. Turns out the flue liner had a 2 inch gap where it met the smoke chamber, and the old book had a diagram showing exactly how that creates a vacuum flip. I patched it with refractory cement on Tuesday and the draft flipped back normal. Has anyone else found weird old manuals or books that solved a mystery for you?
