Old timer told me to stop scrubbing so hard on stainless liners

I had a customer complain that their liner looked scratched up after I cleaned it. I thought I was being thorough but this guy with 30 years in showed me how I was basically sanding the finish off. He said 'you ain't polishing a car, you're just removing soot' and handed me a softer brush. Now I use a nylon bristle brush and almost no pressure, and the liners look way better. Anyone else get told they were overdoing something on the job?

You ain't polishing a car, you're just removing soot" - that's a good line, but I see it a bit differently. Scrubbing too hard can definitely mess up the finish on stainless, no argument there. But in my experience, a lot of those "scratches" customers complain about are actually just leftover residue or hard water spots that look like scratches. I've found that using a green scotch-brite pad with a gentle hand and some bar keepers friend works way better than any soft brush for getting that original shine back without damaging the metal. Soft brushes just push grime around for me.

A lot of folks don't realize how much of that "damage" is just water spots too, @emmag40. I swear half my success in this is just figuring out what isn't actually a scratch before I start scrubbing.
