Old timer told me to use a shop vac on the cleanout door before sweeping and I thought he was nuts

Met this guy Jerry at a parts house in Nashville last month. He insisted I vacuum out the bottom of the chimney before I even run my brush. I always just swept top down and cleaned up afterwards. Tried it on a particularly nasty creosote job yesterday and man, the air quality in the room was night and day. Less dust floating around while I worked. Has anyone else tried this order of operations?

Gotta call BS on that one, honestly. A shop vac is gonna suck up the stuff that's already loose, sure, but that fine dust and creosote that's stuck on the walls? You're still gonna have to sweep it down and it's gonna fly everywhere anyway. Seems like overthinking it for a few seconds of clean air.

Doesn't that just blow the loose stuff deeper into the chimney?
