Overheard a homeowner in Denver say 'a clean chimney is just for looks' and it made me want to scream.

My neighbor in Boulder said the same thing about his wood stove last winter, and I just stared at him. A blocked chimney can literally burn your house down from a chimney fire, it's not some optional decoration. We had to have ours cleaned after a bird's nest got up there, and the amount of flammable creosote the sweep showed me was scary. That kind of thinking is how people end up on the local news.

Honestly I used to skip cleanings to save money. Seeing that thick creosote buildup changed my mind fast though. Now I just book the sweep every fall.
