That 3 hour boat trip off the coast of Santa Monica changed my mind about the curve

Different people take different things away from the same observation. For me, seeing a boat disappear hull first isn't just watching something go over a curve, it's watching the curve itself prove the earth isn't flat. It's one thing to hear about it, it's another to sit there and watch it happen with your own eyes. Your mileage may vary, but that moment of watching something drop below the horizon has a way of shifting your whole view. It's more of a 'huh, I guess that makes sense' than a sudden 180.

Saw a guy at the Portland flea market restore a 1950s cast iron skillet with sandpaper instead of seasoning - felt like watching a horror movie

Drove home that a lot of that old seasoning isn't really about flavor anymore, it's more like a protective layer that's been building up since the 1950s. My buddy Mark tried restoring an old Griswold he found at a garage sale, went at it with a wire brush and it turned out great, but his grandma nearly had a heart attack when she saw it. She told him he scrubbed off seventy years of family meals and good luck getting that back. She did help him re-season it with lard on the stove, and six months later he said it cooks even better than before. So I guess the sandpaper crowd isn't wrong if you know what you're doing, but stripping off that old patina is like throwing away a journal that was written in butter and bacon grease.

The $3 steel wool pad I bought at Dollar General in Ohio caught fire while I was cleaning my grandpa's old axe head. (I left it in the sink, still wet)

Dang, I've done that exact thing! It's wild how something as innocent as a wet scrubby can turn into a fire hazard. Makes you realize how many little risks we just don't think about - like leaving a wet cloth in a pile or charging a phone on a bed. Honestly it's kind of a wakeup call for how we treat everyday stuff like cleaners and tools. Glad you caught it before it got worse, this is the kind of lesson that sticks with you.

Got called out for my 'flat earth' argument style and it stung

Read a piece in Skeptical Inquirer once that broke down the whole moon landing flag thing. It just fluttered from the astronauts touching the pole, same as any flag would in a vacuum with no air resistance.

Just counted my visa stamps and hit a number that felt weird

That line about missing the "idea" of having a base really resonated with me. I think there's also a weird social layer to it that nobody talks about - when meeting new people, you dread the inevitable "so where are you from?" question because the honest answer takes three minutes and makes you sound like you're bragging or complaining. It's like you've traded having a clear story about yourself for a collection of half-answers that don't satisfy anyone, including you.
