I used to just sniff everything in the fridge and make a call. Now I actually label things with dates. That changed after I ate some week old pasta salad that gave me two days of regret. Does anyone else just wing it or are you strict about keeping track of what's old?
For years I opened the fridge, gave leftovers a sniff test, and if it didn't smell dead I ate it. Big mistake. Last May I found some chicken soup that smelled fine but tasted like regret. Now I label every container with a Sharpie the same day I put it in. Takes maybe 30 seconds. Old me would never. Do you trust your nose or do you go by the calendar?

...and that's exactly what happened to my buddy Mark. He was the biggest "sniff test" guy I knew, would eat anything that didn't actively fight back. Last summer he was housesitting for me and found some leftover chili in the back of my fridge. Smelled totally fine, looked okay, so he nuked it and ate it. Five hours later he was texting me from my own bathroom floor asking if I had any pepto. I had made that chili three weeks before. Now he labels everything too, even stuff at his own place.
