My roommate swore by the 'sniff test' for everything in our fridge

She said if it doesn't smell bad, it's fine to eat, so I kept a jar of salsa that had been open for 3 months. Woke up at 3am puking my guts out after a late night snack and missed a full day of work in Portland. Anyone else think the sniff test is total bs for anything older than a week?

My buddy did this with some leftover Chinese food he found behind the takeout container in the back of his fridge. Sniffed it, seemed fine, and ate it. The next day he called out of his shift at the warehouse and spent 6 hours hugging the toilet.

I trust my nose more than a posted date, a little sniff never hurt nobody.
