Appreciation post: our block finally got compost bins after a year of asking
Our neighborhood association in Portland has been bugging the city for a compost pilot program since last spring. This Tuesday they finally dropped off 30 bins at the community center, and I grabbed one for my house. It felt huge because I was literally watching my banana peels and coffee grounds rot in a bag before. Now I have a dedicated bin in the backyard, and I filled it halfway in just three days with garden clippings and kitchen scraps. Has anyone else gotten a local composting program started in their town? I'd love tips on keeping it from smelling bad.

Is it really that serious though? @zarapalmer sounds like she overengineered a trash can.

oh man the "rotting in a bag" thing hit close to home. my friend lisa in seattle got a similar pilot bin last year and she said the smell was brutal until she learned to layer it right. she told me she started putting a thick layer of dried leaves or torn up cardboard on top of every new addition and it cut the stink by like 80%. she also said she stopped adding cooked food scraps with oil cause that turned her bin into a science experiment. she even got a little drill bit to poke air holes in the side. now her whole backyard smells like fresh dirt instead of garbage.
